Since 1976, James Michelini of Port St. Lucie, Florida has made it his job to donate blood. The now 73-year-old man donates blood every second Wednesday, and has since smashed his target of ten gallons ten fold.
James started donating blood when he lived in Connecticut, and after his move to Florida he donates to a OneBlood donation center every 2 weeks. According to the original story, James initially donated blood on a whim and never stopped since then.
Each pint of platelets can save the life of 1 person, and every pint of blood has the potential to save up to 3 people. By this math, James has saved more than 800 people’s lives thanks to the 100 gallons of blood he has donated over the past 43 years.
