A Golden Retriever Is Mayor of Southern California Town

Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller II is a golden retriever that has been the mayor of Idyllwild, a southern California town, since 2014.

People call him Max for short. Idyllwild is a town that has been electing dogs like Max to office since 2012. A nonprofit called Idyllwild Animal Rescue Friends sponsored the first-ever mayoral election, where any resident was allowed to nominate their pet for office.

Max became the town’s first mayor, beating out 13 other dogs and 2 cats. Constituents paid a $1 donation to vote, and they raised a total of $31,000 for the organization.

His oath read “I, Max, do swear on my food bowl to faithfully execute my duties as Mayor of Idyllwild.” Max is accompanied by Deputy Mayors Mikey and Mitzie, siblings from the same litter. The pets are owned by Idyllwild resident Phyllis Mueller.

The pups make appearances at special city events and even make house calls to residents by request. “They put a smile on people’s faces and they create a lot of happiness,” Phyllis said.

Max Mueller II is aware he’s the mayor and according to Phyllis “he knows he’s the mayor. He poses on command.” She added that the mayor’s aim is to “help make the world a better place by conveying unconditional love and doing as many good deeds for others as possible.”

“We continue to believe we can make the world a better place by bringing joy, happiness and fun communication to as many people as possible. It is our intention to help increase the survival potential, well-being, longevity, and happiness of every person with whom we come in contact.”

While this may seem unconventional, it’s been working for the southern California town of Idyllwild for over 7 years now.
