John Lockett is a beloved school janitor at Sand Hill Elementary in Carrollton, Georgia. The entire staff and 685 students at the school surprised Lockett with a retirement party.
Lockett was given a cape and a crown and told it was “Mr. John Day”, according to Good Morning America. Lockett, currently 83-years-old, has been a janitor for over 10 years at the school, after previously working in construction.
John’s last day is Friday, but he was thrown a party a week earlier. He ended up in tears with the kids after being so surprised. “It was so sweet. He is a very humble, hardworking, just dedicated to the job. He is as good as they come”, school principal Carla Meigs told Good Morning America.
Lockett’s wife helped the school plan the party. Photos and videos taken during the party show John’s surprised and emotional reactions as he wore his crown and cape.
Lockett is looking forward to spending more time with his family, including his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, after his retirement.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Lockett said “this school means so much to me. I really love my job, it is for the kids.”
