12-Year-Old Designs Bow Ties To Help Shelter Dogs Get Adopted

Darius Brown, a 12-year-old boy from Newark, New Jersey, learned to combine two of his passions into something useful.

Brown is the owner of Beaux and Paws, an organization designed to help shelter pets increase their chances of being adopted. Darius creates hand-made bow ties, so animals can look good while seeking adoption.

“It helps the dog look noticeable, very attractive. It helps them find a forever, loving home … I love everything about dogs and cats,” he told Today.

At the age of two, Darius was diagnosed with developmental issues, and his passion for dogs and bow ties helped him through life.

His mother, Joy, and sister, Dezhai, noticed a breakthrough when he turned eight years old. Dezhai enrolled in cosmetology school, and Darius began helping his sister cut fabric and make hair ribbons.

This hobby soon evolved into Darius making his own bow ties, and he started wearing one every day. Strangers would reportedly stop him on the street and ask where they could buy one. From that moment on, Darius knew he had something good going for himself, and that’s when he launched Beaux and Paws.

“I wear bow ties all the time. Literally everywhere I go, I wear a bow tie.”

Since the start of his organization, Brown has donated hundreds of his bow ties to animal shelters throughout the country. He’s now trying to raise funds to help provide more of them to cats and dogs that are in need of homes.

For every purchase from Beaux and Paws, Brown makes a donation to the American Society for Preventation of Cruelty to Animals. He also uses his proceeds to reinvest into his company to make more bow ties. He has been receiving fabric and supply donations from supporters to help him along with his vision.

“The donations help a lot because we were just digging in our pockets, buying the fabric ourselves,” his Mom said.

Barack Obama even acknowledges young Darius Brown and sent him a letter praising him for his hard work and commitment to community service.
